Ireland&#8217;s data regulator has sent a proposal to other regulators to block Meta from forwarding data to the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forwarding data from Facebook and Instagram to the U.S. may be against European regulations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/europe-faces-facebook-blackout-instagram-meta-data-protection\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writes Politico<\/a>. The Irish Data Protection Commission has sent the proposal to block the transit of data to the US to all other European regulators. Those now have a month to give their input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If regulators force Meta to stop storing European user data on U.S. servers, that presumably means Facebook and Instagram will go offline in Europe. Meta herself said that a few months ago<a href=\"https:\/\/tweakers.net\/nieuws\/192872\/meta-stopt-waarschijnlijk-met-facebook-in-eu-als-vs-datatransfers-niet-mogen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so said<\/a>. Whether that actually happens will have to be seen if regulators stick with their proposed blockade. The company said in February <a href=\"https:\/\/tweakers.net\/nieuws\/192966\/meta-heeft-absoluut-geen-intentie-om-met-facebook-te-vertrekken-uit-europa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have no intention<\/a> to leave Europe. It is unclear whether WhatsApp would continue to function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, the regulations for data exchange between Europe and the US <a href=\"https:\/\/tweakers.net\/reviews\/9990\/privacy-shield-20-en-datatransfers-beschermt-dit-wel-tegen-surveillance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advanced<\/a>. The previous Privacy Shield was punctured by the European courts in 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/tweakers.net\/nieuws\/169812\/eu-hof-haalt-streep-door-privacy-shield-en-blokkeert-datatransfers-naar-vs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot<\/a>. The thorny issue was how the US handles the protection of personal data and how their surveillance plays a role in it.
